JH Writes a Story: Class Work #2

I quite like this one. Again, one of those 5-10 minute assignments. I think I’ll lengthen it when I”m free.

————-

People shun me on the streets when I look at them for too long. But I can’t help it. I like observing people. They say I’m strange; weird but they don’t know me. My friends know me. All 154 of them on MySpace. They look past the makeup, wig and boots. I’m sure they do. They think I’m hot. They tell me so in the comments. Some compliment me on my wonderful personality. They know me well. They really do.

Me? I return the favor. They’re flattered to go out with me. I make it a point to ask my friends out. The movies, the park, my house. Sometimes all three. Some people aren’t nice. They pretend they’re my friends just so they can meet up with me to call me names. These people, I shut them up. I bring them home and make them quiet. Agreeable. I like agreeable people. Love them even.

Yes. I like my friends. All 43 of them.

Overdue Vacation Pics: Nova Scotia

Part 4: Nova Scotia

We were there to Ride the Lobster which really is quite a good way to spend your vacation in Nova Scotia because there’s nothing else to do there. The shops close early and you’d really want to be taking in the scenic countryside anyway.

Overdue Vacation Pics: New York City

Part 3: New York City

It wasn’t the bright lights that impressed me. Nor was it Broadway and all the shopping districts. Nope. It was really how the cityscape much resembled the environments in the Spiderman videogame that got me quite awestruck. (more…)

Overdue Vacation Pics: Montreal

Part 2: Montreal

I’d have loved to spend more time in Montreal - it’s got a chill vibe and is the sort of place I’d really love to spend a week walking around instead of 8 hours loitering about.

Overdue Vacation Pics: The Maine Event

Sorry for the 2 month long wait.

While traveling to Ride the Lobster in Nova Scotia, Canada, my trip took me from Singapore to New York to Maine THEN to Nova Scotia before detouring to Montreal, New York and back to Singapore.

Part 1: Maine

Portland, Maine strikes me as a quiet little sea town, very different from what Stephen King makes the state out to be in his novels. (more…)

Play

It’s been a long time since I’ve played videogames for hours on end and Patapon doesn’t count because it’s been predominantly a distraction during train rides and a filler during those hours of insomnia (some would argue it’s THE cause for insomnia but I disagree of course). So yea, after reading Mike’s post, here’s a list of what I’ve been playing these days.

Skate (Xbox360)

This is by far one of my favorite 360 games. I love how the controls are so intuitive, how the world is so open-ended and how the objectives are challenging, yet never too difficult to complete with practice. Skate is the perfect example of how a game can be great despite being incredibly buggy. There’s been so many instances where my guy’s got stuck in some walls; the game crashes sometimes; triggers for the completion of objectives don’t work all the time - the list goes on. Yet, I’m addicted.

Mass Effect (Xbox 360)

The only reason why I own this game is that there’s SO much hype surrounding it. It reminds me of Brute Force for the Xbox. Both games are Microsoft titles, they have ‘innovative’ combat systems, they share a similar color palette, they’re both sci-fi thrillers and most importantly, I don’t like either titles. I’m not too sure why I’m playing this even - possibly because I kinda feel bad about not giving it a chance. I’ve not touched this for a couple of days now and in fact, I’m quite keen on putting this up for sale. Hmm.

Katamari Damacy (ps2)

I love bizarre games and this has such an irreverent sense of humor. Makes you wonder how this game was pitched.

Designer: Ok see, we have this little guy. He has this magnetic ball thing which he rolls into things. And this ball gets bigger and rolls people up. Eventually the whole world gets rolled up and you win the game and this little guy flings the ball into orbit and the ball becomes a planet. His dad would be so proud!

Big Shot Executive: Excellent! Here’s 10 million dollars to make the game!

The World Ends With You (NDS)

By the same guys who brought you Kingdom Hearts. Despite being the biggest selling game in Japan, I’ve actually not heard of it until Kee and Shaun kept speaking in code about it. I’m about an hour into it and am loving it. I’ll write more about TWEWY after I’m done with it.

Final Fantasy Tactics A2 (NDS)

Worst. Story. Ever.

There was a time when I was quite enchanted by strategy RPGs. I’ve been through the likes of Vandal Hearts and the first Final Fantasy Tactics on the psOne (among others). IGN gave this game a 9.0. I don’t think it’s worth more than an 8.3. Each battle spans out excessively long with slow character movement, slow VFXes and that annoying lag between your selecting an action and the showing of the options available to you. I don’t see why the first few missions should take almost 20 minutes to play and why a simple text conversation at the pub can set you by by 10 minutes. Ridiculously boring. I’m conflicted whether I should finish the game but if there’s nothing good for the DS after I’m done with TWEWY, it’s likely I will.

Sam and Max Season 1 (PC)

There’s been heaps of accolades lavished on the series but I felt that the plot and gameplay is a lot weaker here than in the original Sam and Max and other Lucasarts classics. Humor in parts of the dialogue seem forced and the puzzles are nowhere as befuddling as those from yesteryear. It makes for a less frustrating experience certainly but I really liked the challenge and satisfaction of spending the next month pondering the next step to take and THEN finally getting it.

Next Games to Play:

Postal (Xbox 360)

FINALLY FINISHING Kingdom Hearts (ps2)

Final Fantasy X (ps2)

Geometry Wars Galaxies (NDS)

Trauma Center 2 (NDS)

Spore (Mac) - when it becomes available

Half

Rainy weather is awfully good weather to lie in bed and sleep and never wake up. Unfortunately, there was that obtrusive half-marathon today which started so early, the first train didn’t even reach the place in time.

We reached and started about 45 minutes later than the start time which isn’t too bad because that meant we weren’t blocked by mud-slinging people in the first few km of the run. The crowds got pretty bad at about the 7km mark when I caught up with a wave of people.

I tried to keep a pace of 1km per 6 minutes but I kinda screwed up a lot after the first 3 km so I finished the first 10km in about 1:10 or so. At about 14km, the run was pretty much all about dodging people while avoiding the mud paths. Not very fun, really. My watch clocked 2:23 at the end of the race. I should finish in about 2:15 though. The pace felt quite comfortable and apart from sore joints at the end of it all, breathing wasn’t an issue at all. I *think* I can keep the pace through a marathon which means about a 5 hour finish.

We’ll see how things go during that 30km run in November where it’d be demoralising once again because only crazy people join it and I’ll end up being the last runner or something.

Once Upon a Time, I Had Ankles

I found an old photo from July or August 2004 I believe… (and no, the photo’s not been cropped waist up)

Evidently, I used to have runners’ legs BEFORE I ACTUALLY STARTED RUNNING OR DOING ANY REMOTE FORM OF REGULAR EXERCISE.

Curse you muscle mass.

Road Hog

This is possibly my favorite photo from Ride the Lobster.
